Introduction to ESIEC (Enterprise Survey for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China) Data

The Enterprise Survey for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China (ESIEC) is a large-scale enterprise survey research initiative jointly conducted by the National School of Development at Peking University, the Institute of Social Science Survey, the Peking University Youth League Committee, and related organizations from other universities. As one of the core survey projects of the Institute of Social Science Survey at Peking University, it is organized and implemented by the Center for Enterprise Research at Peking University.   ESIEC aims to obtain micro-level data reflecting the actual conditions of innovative and entrepreneurial enterprises in China through scientific sampling and field tracking surveys, thereby promoting higher-quality academic and policy research. The survey primarily covers seven domains: entrepreneurial history of business owners (企业家的创业史), enterprise establishment process (企业创建过程), basic enterprise information (企业基本信息), enterprise innovation (企业创新), inter-firm relationships (企业间关系), and business environment (营商环境).   The ESIEC dataset is an openly accessible resource for academia, anonymized in compliance with relevant laws of the People's Republic of China, containing no personally identifiable information. The dataset is currently hosted on the Peking University Open Research Data Platform (https://opendata.pku.edu.cn/dataverse/esiec) and is available to academic researchers upon application.   Currently released ESIEC survey data includes:- 2017 pilot survey data from Henan Province, covering 1,410 completed interviews.

  • February 2020 pandemic survey: 2,513 completed interviews from the ESIEC sample pool, plus 376 web-based questionnaires.
  • May 2020 pandemic survey: 2,508 completed interviews from the ESIEC sample pool, plus 63 web-based questionnaires.

The CnOpenData team has established in-depth collaboration with the Center for Enterprise Research at Peking University to develop data indices. This dataset enables scholars to analyze the development levels, innovation capabilities, and growth potential of entrepreneurial enterprises, as well as assess the overall competence and entrepreneurial spirit of Chinese business founders. It facilitates research on China's socioeconomic phenomena while providing insights into the implementation effectiveness of national policies, demonstrating significant academic and practical value.   For data downloads, visit the Peking University Open Research Data Platform. Additional information about ESIEC can be found on the official website of the Center for Enterprise Research at Peking University (https://www.cer.pku.edu.cn).
