The financial sector refers to the special industry that operates financial commodities, encompassing banking, insurance, trust, securities, and leasing industries.

The financial sector holds a pivotal position in the national economy that affects the whole system through minor adjustments, directly relating to economic development and social stability. It plays crucial roles in optimizing capital allocation, regulating economic activities, reflecting economic conditions, and supervising economic operations.

China's reform and opening-up policy has propelled the vigorous development of its financial sector. Currently, China has essentially established a financial organizational system with state-owned financial institutions as the main body and various types of financial institutions cooperating through division of labor. A financial regulatory framework featuring separate operations and supervision of banking, securities, and insurance industries has gradually taken shape. The diversification of financial institutions reflects the objective requirements of market economy development and economic structure pluralism.

Based on the National Economic Industry Classification, CnOpenData has compiled basic information of industrial and commercial registered enterprises in China's financial sector from 1950 to present. This dataset is categorized into four major sectors: monetary and financial services, capital market services, insurance, and other financial activities, vividly demonstrating the evolutionary trajectory of China's financial industry since the founding of the People's Republic.
