Population distribution refers to the spatial existence patterns and distribution status of populations over specific periods, encompassing both the overall distribution of populations across regions and the distribution of specific demographic groups (e.g., urban populations) or processes/compositions (e.g., migration, sex(性别), etc.). Population distribution is shaped by a combination of natural, social, economic, and political factors. Natural environmental conditions (such as latitude, altitude, proximity to the sea) also play significant roles in influencing population distribution patterns.
Since the 20th century, with the acceleration of global industrialization and urbanization processes, social, economic, and political factors have exerted increasingly profound impacts on population distribution. This has prompted extensive exploration of population-economy interrelationships by economists, culminating in the establishment of specialized population economics as a distinct field.
To support related research, CnOpenData has developed grid-level population distribution data covering all Chinese cities. This dataset reveals daytime and nighttime population distributions across different demographic categories (including gender(性别) and age groups(年龄阶段)) within 250*250-meter grid units at the city level. Notably, it achieves ultra-high temporal resolution with updates every 2 minutes, demonstrating exceptional research value.
