In regional economics, factors such as technological level, political institutions, population distribution, and natural resource endowments significantly impact regional economic activities. As the "primary productive force," science and technology are closely related to urbanization, urban economic issues, spatial structures, regional productivity distribution, and resource development and utilization. Technological progress directly drives social and economic growth.
As a key indicator for measuring technological innovation, patent data effectively quantifies innovative achievements. According to the Intellectual Property Statistical Brief released by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) in December 2020, from January to November 2020, China received 1.403 million invention patent applications and granted 470,000 invention patents, representing a 40% year-on-year increase compared to 2019. Such substantial patent statistics underscore the robust development momentum of innovation in China. However, we have observed that the utilization of macro-level patent data in the industry is overly simplistic, with most studies using provinces and years as the smallest statistical units, failing to conduct more granular statistical analyses.
Compared to micro-level enterprise patent data, CnOpenData's China Patent Statistics by Region provides a macro-level perspective to corroborate regional innovation development. Based on the 2020 Administrative Division Codes, this dataset divides regions by province, city, and district/county and uses months as the smallest statistical unit. It meticulously compiles nationwide data on patent applications and patent grants.
Data Features
- Comprehensive coverage of regional patent statistics in China up to the latest year, including both patent application and grant stages;
- Accurate identification and differentiation of addresses for patent applicants other than the primary applicant;
- Statistics calculated not only at the annual level but also at the monthly level to better suit monthly academic research;
- Statistics calculated not only at the provincial and city levels but also at the district/county level to better accommodate finer-grained regional innovation studies.
