Publishing papers in journals constitutes a highly significant academic activity, representing not only researchers' scholarly achievements but also their contributions to the academic community and society at large. The importance of journal publications extends beyond showcasing individual research outcomes to advancing academic progress and generating new knowledge that drives scientific and technological development in society.
A prevalent phenomenon exists in journal paper distribution: within specific disciplines or fields, a small number of journals contain substantial relevant information, while the majority contribute minimally. This concentration of scientific literature—where a disproportionate volume of global research output is published in a limited number of journals—is termed the "core journal effect." Consequently, each discipline develops its own "core journals." Compared to the total number of domestic journals, core journals represent a relatively small subset. Including discontinued publications, over ten thousand journals across various fields have collectively published more than 13 million papers as of the end of 2023.
