Economic policy uncertainty (EPU) index for China’s 31 provinces

- Abstract: Following the methodology of Baker et al. (2016), we constructed a set of EPU indexes at the provincial level in China. First, we selected the daily newspapers of 31 provinces in China as the source for news media reports. Second, we established the following criteria for identifying EPU-related articles through keyword searches: a news article is classified as a target article if it contains at least one economic policy-related keyword and at least one uncertainty-related keyword. Third, we calculated the annual count of target articles for each province and normalized this value by dividing it by the total number of articles containing the keyword "economy" in corresponding provincial newspapers for that year, thereby obtaining the EPU article proportion for each province. Fourth, we standardized these provincial EPU proportions using their respective standard deviations to derive the final EPU indexes.
Mr. Jian Yu and his collaborators have developed a provincial EPU index to quantify economic policy uncertainty across China's 31 provinces from 2000 to 2017. Please cite the following paper when utilizing this dataset:
