Discipline evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of first-level disciplines with doctoral or master's degree-granting authority, conducted by the Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC) of the Ministry of Education in accordance with the Catalogue of Disciplines for Degree Awarding and Talent Development issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education.
The evaluation始终坚持 the principle of voluntary application and free participation. All institutions with doctoral or master's degree-granting authority for first-level disciplines (including both first-level and second-level authorized disciplines) may apply. The evaluation is conducted every four years on average.
- The First Round was carried out in three phases from 2002 to 2004 (assessing specific disciplines each phase), involving 1,366 disciplines from 229 institutions.
- The Second Round was conducted in two phases from 2006 to 2008, with 2,369 disciplines from 331 institutions participating.
- The Third Round evaluated 95 first-level disciplines (excluding military science) in 2012, covering 4,235 disciplines from 391 institutions (a 79% increase from the second round).
- The Fourth Round assessed 95 first-level disciplines (excluding 16 disciplines such as military science) in 2016, involving 7,449 disciplines from 513 institutions (a 76% increase from the third round), with 94% of doctoral-authorized disciplines nationwide participating.
The publication of evaluation results aims to provide objective information for participating institutions to identify disciplinary strengths and weaknesses, promote disciplinary development, and improve graduate education quality; offer reference for students in selecting disciplines and programs; and facilitate public understanding of the progress and outcomes of discipline development in Chinese universities and research institutions.
The CnOpenData team presents China's Discipline Evaluation Data, the most precise and comprehensive disciplinary dataset currently available, divided into two sub-tables: University Discipline Evaluation Results and Research Institution Discipline Evaluation Results. To enhance discipline-specific assessments, the indicator system is further categorized into seven types: "Humanities & Social Sciences," "Natural Sciences," "Engineering," "Agricultural Sciences," "Medical Sciences," "Management Sciences," and "Arts," enabling multi-dimensional and in-depth data exploration!
