The construction industry refers to a material production sector within the national economy engaged in the survey, design, construction, and maintenance of existing buildings and structures. According to the National Economic Industry Classification, the construction industry—as one of the twenty major sectors—comprises four broad categories: building construction, civil engineering construction, building installation, and building decoration, renovation, and other construction activities.

The primary function of the construction industry is to conduct building and installation activities involving various construction materials, components, and machinery/equipment, thereby creating productive and non-productive fixed assets for the national economy. The development of the construction industry is closely intertwined with the scale of fixed asset investment, exhibiting a relationship of mutual reinforcement and constraint.

Since 1978, the construction market has continuously expanded. Domestic construction output value has increased more than twentyfold, while the sector’s value-added contribution to GDP has risen from 3.8% to 7.0%, making it a vital force driving rapid national economic growth. Against the backdrop of accelerating urbanization in China, the construction industry holds even broader market prospects and developmental potential.

Based on the National Economic Industry Classification, CnOpenData has compiled basic information on industrially and commercially registered construction enterprises in China from 1950 to the present, vividly illustrating the evolution of China’s construction industry since the founding of the People’s Republic.
