  Carbon emissions trading (abbreviated as carbon trading) is a market mechanism adopted to promote global greenhouse gas emission reduction and reduce global carbon dioxide emissions. After arduous negotiations, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC, abbreviated as "the Convention") on May 9, 1992. In December 1997, the first additional protocol to the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol (abbreviated as the Protocol), was passed in Kyoto, Japan.
