The ocean constitutes one of Earth's largest ecosystems and exerts a profoundly significant influence on the survival of global species. However, marine environments have faced severe pollution issues in recent years, posing substantial threats to ecosystems and human health, with coastal waters being particularly affected.

Coastal water quality serves as a crucial indicator for assessing the ecological health of nearshore marine environments. In recent years, alongside the continuous advancement of the "Beautiful Bays" conservation and development initiative, China's coastal water quality has demonstrated steady improvement. According to relevant authorities, in 2021, 81.3% of China's coastal waters met the national Class I or II seawater quality standards, while Class III seawater accounted for 5.2%, and Class IV or inferior Class IV seawater comprised 13.5%. Water quality in certain estuaries and bays still requires enhancement.

Against the backdrop of a growing societal commitment to ecological civilization, the imperative for stringent management and improvement of coastal water quality has become increasingly prominent. In this context, CnOpenData introduces the China Seawater Quality Monitoring Dataset, encompassing key indicators for coastal water quality monitoring through 2017, thereby facilitating relevant research.
